Comenius-day on the 5th December 2001

com06.jpg

Orivesi Upper Secondary School dedicated the 5th December 2001 to the Comenius-project. This year the themes of the project are job; hobbies and other things witch are connected with the young's world. - The aim of the Comenius-project is to familiarize people with Europe and make them feel that they really are European, says Pirjo Jaakamo, the "Comenius-organizer" at Orivesi Upper Secondary School. The project also tries to help people to improve their social skills and the ability of getting through big changes. The target of the Comenius-project is also to increase toleration and make people respect other cultures more.

Last year the teachers of Orivesi Upper Secondary School got a little negative feedback from the students. That's why this year the students didn't have to write anything for the friendship schools. This time they got information about the themes of the Comenius-project and about their coming tasks. So the students will do the presentations later.

Various workshops

During the Comenius-day the second year students got information about their coming tasks at various workshops. They will write essays about the themes of the Comenius-project. The essays will then be sent to the friendship schools in Lithuania and Fuerteventura. One of the workshops was Comenius-exhibition. There Pirjo Jaakamo, the "Comenius-organizer" of our school, told students general facts about the Comenius-project. She also told about the history and the target of the project. After Pirjo's speech the students had a chance to have a look at the essays they've done before.

At one of the workshops Miila Mustajoki, who teaches English at our school, told students about an essay with the subject "My values and attitudes", which they'll have to write in course number 5 of English. The students were familiarized with the subject by discussing it and playing a game in which they had to answer many (difficult) questions. Miila also gave the students a handout with some useful words on the subject. At the "Finnish cuisine" -workshop Sanna Pirttinen, who teaches English and French at our school, helped students to translate Finnish recipes into English.

Students also got information about how to affect things in the society. Two third year students of our school, Jyrki Mattila and Elina Korri, presented this subject. At this workshop students were told about their possibilities to affect societal things, mostly in Orivesi.

At the congregation's workshop students were told about their possibilities to affect congregational things. Eeva-Maria Elkadib, The youth leader of Orivesi parish, told about the government of the church and about various youth cultures, especially the congregation's youth culture. "Congregation's youth work aims at happy adulthood", she said. In the computer class an employee of the labour office told students how to search jobs on the Internet. She presented many sites, which are connected with work.

In the home economics class some students and Jaana Koski, a teacher of home economics, were cooking Lithaunian and Spanish food. They had got some recipes in English from the friendship schools. For example Anna-Leena Jaakamo and Heli Roos cooked Lithaunian soft honey cake (Minkstas meduolis) and potato balls. Anna-Leena told that the cake was very similar to traditional Finnish cakes. The only difficulty was that the amounts of substances in the recipes were very inaccurate and generous. We Finns are so used to exact amounts. The Comenius-day finished with celebration of independence. The next day, the 6th December, was namely Finland's independence day.
